Any recommended alternative treatments for PCOS?

I have PCOS and my hormones are just kind of out of whack, so to speak. Any recommended herbal remedies or other holistic and natural remedies that might help regulate my hormones?

PCOS is caused by insulin resistance. As a matter of fact women with PCOS commonly become diabetic in their later years. By guarding this insulin insensitivity you can improve this condition. Low carb helps to keep your insulin levels stable. Low carb foods include avocados, fish, mustard greens, turnip greens, spinach, beef, asparagus, zuchini, raspberries, blueberries, turnip roots, celery roots, bell peppers, chicken, pork, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, celery, shrimp, wild game.

Lots of foods to choose from at your finger tips. The relationship between insulin and estrogen are they are both hormones. One affects the other and in some women they affect eachother even more.

This is not a cure, it is a treatment and I suspect that it will help your symptoms.

1.Lifestyle. Exercise and weight reduction have been shown to be highly beneficial in the treatment of PCOS and its symptoms. Exercise can helps reduce weight, regulate menstrual cycles, and reduce risk factors for diabetes and heart disease which are associated with PCOS.

2.Diet. Women with PCOS respond well to a low glycemic index, low simple carbohydrate, low animal product, high fiber diet which helps reduce weight, regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, and reduce inflammatory prostaglandins. Dietary changes, including reducing animal products and fats, while increasing foods that nourish the liver such as carrots, dark green vegetables, lemons, and beets, can be beneficial.

3.Bentonite Clay. You would use this to bathe in. It has a drawing agent that acts like a sponge. It literally pulls toxins out through the skin. This would also help to balance your hormones, while also pulling any other toxins out of the way.

4.Dietary Supplements -There is a wide range of supplemental nutrients that may help you alleviate the symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and reduce the incidence of ovarian cysts. Not all of them are appropriate or necessary for every woman.

5.Alternative treatments - PCOS can be addressed using many types of alternative treatment. The rebalancing of hormones is a primary focus of all these therapies. Acupuncture works on the body’s energy flow according to the meridian system. Chinese herbs, such as gui zhi fu ling wan, can be effective. In naturopathic medicine, treatment focuses on helping the liver function more optimally in the horomonal balancing process.

Essential fatty acids, including flax oil, evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis), and black currant oil, act as anti-inflammatories and hormonal regulators. Western herbal medicine uses phytoestrogen and phytoprogesteronic herbs, such as blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) and false unicorn root (Chamaelirium luteum), as well as liver herbs, like dandelion (Taraxacum mongolicum), to work toward hormonal balance.

Supplementation with antioxidants, including zinc, and vitamins A, E, and C, is also recommended. Constitutional homeopathy can bring about a deep level of healing with the correct remedies.

I recommend that you consult with a licensed healthcare professional regarding the best supplements and treatment for you.

Hey there cyster. :)

I have PCOS too.

MDs put me on Metformin and it made me sick if I ate some veggies. It didn’t make sense to me to take a med that restricted healthy foods so I stopped it. I found an MD who now practices Naturopathic medicine and that’s made allllll the difference in the world! :) I now eat sugar free/yeast free to help chill my hormones out and keep my blood sugar normal too. If I do not eat my protein at meals first…I get sick! Eating this way has helped me lose all the weight I gained from this. I don’t know how bad your hormones are…I have to take bio-identical hormones on a daily basis. My progesterone is so whacked I have to take it EVERY DAY, 3 times a day…. but hopefully not forever. I read and read all about this stuff… a few things to think about….

1. Iodine Supplementation. My doc put me on it and I learned about what it does for PCOSers by doing research and then quizzing him on the next visit. Iodine DISSOLVES ovarian cysts, breast cysts/tumors…etc. He has me on Iodoral and I buy it from this site now..it’s a charity. http://www.breastcancerchoices.org. The other place you can pose questions and get wowed by people showing you the research is at curezone.com in the Iodine Supplementation forum….Trapper, Wombat, and Vulcan know what they are talking about! :)

2. The other thing I would ask is…are you aware of how important your liver is in all of this??? It metabolizes our hormones and us with PCOS are tending to have congested livers/gallbladders. So liver/gallbladder flushes are another thing to keep in the back of your mind. I get the most out with the Coke Flush. No MD will encourage you to ever do it/try it because if you fix yourself on your own…they can’t make any money then….my doc said probably if I cleaned my liver out and allowed it to work on it’s own again…I could probably get off all the natural hormones. YIPPEE!!! If you want more information, check out the Liver Flush Support Group at curezone.com.

3. This site helped me out greatly in the beginning. Not sure if you know about it….a great place to talk to hundreds of thousands of PCOSers!!! http://www.soulcysters.net

4. Other items that mess up our hormones: dairy products (I drink rice milk), margarine (we now use butter), canola oil (we now use olive or coconut). You would not believe the stuff that messed with your hormones. Check out this site for info. It’s got new stuff up DAILY. http://www.newstarget.com

GOOD LUCK!!! :)
