My cousins son has Scoliosis and surgery has been recomended. Any alternative treatments available?
We have found some alternative treatments available with very good results. Any suggestions?
Guess I forgot to add, he’s 15 but has very good posture inspite of his scoliosos. Dr he’s been seeing says that he will be full grown within one year and the time to act is now. He has no problems whatsoever now (neither breathing or heart) so we are just researching alternative meathods for treatment.
Oops, he has very little pain which occures very rarely.

If it were my son,I would definitely find a good osteopath to check him and give some recommendations. Osteopaths are medical doctors who do spinal adjustments and have specialized training on the mechanics of the skeleton and muscles.
I remember when I was in high school several class mates had that surgery and they were laid up a long time. I hope your cousin finds the best treatment for her son.
I go to acupuncture for my mva back/neck injuries. That’s an option too, or crani-sacral therapy can be helpful.
i am 35 and was diagnosed wth scoliosis at 14 i spent four years wearing a brace but ended up having to have surgery anyway! go for the surgery, these days your out of hospital in a week, i was told certain excercises would cure it but it was wrong and just prolonging things! tell him good luck!
Scoliosis is a deviation of the curvature of the spine (the lined up vertebrae in your back) toward the side. Scoliosis is very common and in most cases does not cause problems., especially if the curvature measures 20-30 or less. Now, listen, if the curvature is big, there are several thing that can be done. The first is to know the age of the patient, and the gender. The reason is because of growth. You see, a 17 year old girl might not have much growth (bone/height) as a 17 year old boy. So, that is important in who is going to get in long term with the years worst. If the scoliosos is causing pain, we have a problem and something has to be done. Specialist usually, and dependent on the individual case, recomment baces or a form of removable casting to wear for at least 12 hours a day. But in many occasion and when the scoliosis is bad and has the potential threat (which is the main reason) of interferring with the function of the lungs, then surgical intervention is necessary to place rods. Rods and long metal devices (the thickness of a pencil or less) place in both sides of the spine, to stabilize and strainghten it out. There will be some limitations, but in the long run will be more benefitial. Can the rod brake? yes. Can they come out of lace? yes. But in the hands of a competent well experienced orthopedic surgeon is less likely to happen. And, hey..listen..remember, your cousing or parents (if a minor) have the rights for second opinions, which is another option I give you. Remember: scoliosis is common and if minor, does not cause pain. good question!!
Hi C Farnham
Here are some ideas to heal the issue.
Natural Cures
Acupuncture: Acupuncture can help correct scoliosis that is caused by muscle contractions due to its ability to release your body`s stagnant vital energy or qi. As your vital energy begins to freely flow once more, your muscles will automatically start to relax and return to their normal shape. This, in turn, can significantly improve scoliosis.
To further stimulate vital energy and correct scoliosis, electrical current may sometimes be passed through the acupuncture needles. This helps to deepen the effects of the acupuncture treatment, resulting in deeper healing and longer-lasting results.
Aromatherapy: Massaging tense muscles that are contributing to your scoliosis with essential oils can help release muscle tension and contraction. Ideal essential oils for this purpose include clary sage, lavender, marjoram, and rosemary.
Bodywork: The field of bodywork offers a number of techniques for treating and preventing scoliosis, such as Rolfing and Hellerwork, both which involve manipulation of the muscles, connective tissue, and joints in order to allow the body, muscles, and connective tissue to properly realign themselves. Other types of bodywork that can effectively treat scoliosis include Bowen Therapy, Massage Therapy, Reflexology, and Shiatsu. Movement awareness therapies such as the Alexander technique, the Feldenkrais Method, and Trager Work, are also effective for realigning and correcting posture and spinal curvature.
Chiropractic: Chiropractic can be very effective in helping to resolve scoliosis because of its ability to correct spinal misalignments. All forms of chiropractic care work by adjusting the spine to release subluxations. In doing so, chiropractic also alleviates nerve pressure and restores normal muscle function, all of which can significantly reduce scoliosis symptoms.
Two specific chiropractic methods are particularly useful for scoliosis. The first is known as the Pettibon technique, since it was developed by the chiropractor Burl Pettibon. This method works by correcting specific distortions in the spine and surrounding muscles that most commonly cause or contribute to scoliosis.
A second method, known as chiropractic biophysics, or CBP, entails in-depth analysis of spinal distortions and poor posture. In addition to chiropractic adjustments specifically tailored to address these issues, chiropractors trained in CBP also instruct their patients in self-care exercises that they can use to further correct their scoliosis symptoms.
Lifestyle: In dealing with scoliosis, it is essential that you improve your posture and learn how to properly move your body. A regular exercise program, especially stretching, can also help improve your symptoms.
Nutritional Supplements: Calcium and magnesium supplements can help your back muscles to relax, thereby helping to release chronic muscle contraction that is associated with scoliosis.
Osteopathy: Because of their ability to combine conventional and alternative medicine techniques, osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) are in a unique position to treat scoliosis. Osteopathic techniques range from gentle joint work to specific thrust approaches similar to chiropractic adjustments.
In addition to being able to manipulate the spine and other joints of the body to relieve tight muscles and restore spinal alignment, most D.O.s are also licensed to give injections in order to relieve painful inflammation in the joints that can also cause scoliosis. In addition, they may use electrical stimulation and various forms of mechanical therapy in order to trigger muscle relaxation, including gentle “muscle energy” techniques, and functional and positional release techniques, all of which are unique to osteopathic medicine.
Physical Manipulation Techniques: Physical manipulation techniques help to move the muscles, connective tissues, and vertebrae of the back into proper alignment, and can also correct problems relating to stress and physical pain. Physical therapists will also usually work to stretch and relax muscles by teaching their patients effective stretching exercises, and by training them to develop healthier habits related to posture.
Alternative Professional Care
The following professional care therapies are also useful for treating and preventing scoliosis: Alphabiotics, Applied Kinesiology, Craniosacral Therapy, Neural Therapy, Qigong, Tai Chi, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Yoga.
Best of health to you
If it were my child, I would put him on an airplane and fly to China. You can read for yourself in the book “101 Miracles” http://www.amazon.com/Miracles-Natural-Healing-Luke-Chan/dp/0963734148 how a young school girl in China had developed the exact same problem from carrying heavy school books. She checked into this hospital and within a week was complete straightened and healed. Don’t hesitate to buy this book and see for yourself.
I have been practicing Zhineng Qigong for about 1 year now with amazing results. I am hoping to make a trip to China to visit their “World’s Largest Medicineless Hospital” someday to see the miracles for myself, and maybe receive one or two…
Qigong is the ability to pull the chi right out of the air, “for free” so to speak. It took a culture as rich and deep as the Chinese to bring us to the level of understanding that we currently enjoy.
But leave it to the German’s with their amazing creative abilities to invent a machine that “makes” chi. There are machines now popular that generate chi, and can provide many of the wonderful results as the ancient (and free) method of quigong. Some of the machines now available and gaining large followings of satisfied customers are the QRS Quantron, the MRS 2000 and the BEMER 3000. Check out our review of these modern healing marvels at http://electromeds.com
For people too busy to practice traditional qigong, one of these chi machine generators may be a practical alternative. For people who own these machines, they say they wouldn’t trade theirs for anything in the world..
